OVERVIEW

Origination of Pop Warner Football and Goals

Pop Warner Football is an international program operated for the benefit of its youthful participants. Since 1929, the program's philosophy has been: Academics and athletics go hand-in-hand. At every level, Pop Warner Football seeks to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football or cheerleading, but also the importance of education, in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound mind, body and character - and having a good time along the way!

The general objectives of Pop Warner Football are to inspire youth, regardless of race, creed or national origin, to practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship, and physical fitness, as reflected in the life of the late Glenn Scobie "Pop" Warner.

Pop Warner strives to make the game "fun" for all boys and girls. Coaches must constantly keep in mind the ages of the participants. The program stresses learning lessons of value far beyond the playing or cheering days of the boys and girls involved, such as: self-discipline, teamwork, concentration, friendship, leadership and good sportsmanship.

With such goals in mind, and by providing an opportunity to participate in an organized, supervised environment with emphasis on maximum safety and participation, Pop Warner Football offers young men and women a unique experience.  Today, over 200,000 players participate in Pop Warner Football in 39 states.  In addition to the 4,200 tackle Pop Warner teams, there are 700 flag football teams, and 85,000 cheerleaders participating under the Pop Warner umbrella. These teams provide young athletes the opportunity to compete at a young age and learn valuable "life" lessons such as teamwork, toughness, work ethic and commitment to excellence. It also prepares these young players for eventual high school participation, while others go on to college and NFL careers. But it all starts on the Pop Warner level.

Beach Cities Pop Warner Football is a proud part of this international organization.  We are an "Association" within the Orange Empire Conference.  The internal structure of  Pop Warner Football is described below.

Pop Warner Structure, Definitions

As noted above, Beach Cities Pop Warner Football is an Association within the Orange Empire Conference.  A description of the Pop Warner Football structure is found below:

HLA:

HLA (Highest Local Authority) is an abbreviation used to identify the League, Conference or Federation which is issued a charter by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. All HLAs are responsible to National with the assistance of the appropriate Regional Director acting on behalf of Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc.

League:

The term "League" has two definitions, each separate and distinct as applicable:
     1. It is a legal term to define a type of HLA, or
     2. It is a grouping of teams of the same ages and weights (playing division) into a "league" for          scheduling purposes.
A League consists of a minimum of four (4) teams playing in the same Age/Weight division.

Association:

Associations are organizations which sponsor and administer one or more teams. They raise money, buy equipment, recruit coaches, secure fields, etc.  Associations are characterized by specific geographical coverage. In cities, they often adopt commonly understood neighborhood names. In the suburbs, they usually take the town name. In rural areas, an association name may embrace an entire county (or a substantial part of it). An association's recruiting area is approved by its HLA and is normally consistent with its geographical name.  When there are no associations, an HLA is intramural.

Team:

A team is the universal, basic unit of organization. At minimum, a team consists of a group of players organized under the direction of a coaching staff in a given Age/Weight division, and may have an attached cheerleading squad, coached by qualified cheer coaches.

Division:

Division has several meanings, the most common of which refers to one of the eight (8) Age/Weight classifications: Mitey-Mite (MM), Junior Peewee (JP), Peewee (P), Junior Midget (JM), Midget (M), Senior Midget (SM), Junior Bantam (JB), and Bantam (B).

Teams- Age and Weight Requirements

Pop Warner Football strongly believes in the health and safety of  the children.  Accordingly, the organization has developed Divisions based on age and weight.  In this way, your child will only play against children of similar weight and age.

The basic age and weight requirements, and the Beach Cities Pop Warner teams associated with each, are as follows:

Newsletter- Volume 3

Breakerz 15... Cobras 32

In the first half, the Breakerz put on a "No Show." In the second half, the Breakerz put on a "Great Show!" In this game, the scoreboard did not tell the whole story...

While this may come as a big surprise to the "avid" readers of our newsletter, I believe that this game was our best game of the year! Down 26 to 0 at the end of the first half, our team appeared to be headed for its worst loss of the season to the very experienced Cobras. However, our team rallied and came out in the second half, pounded the Cobras, and outscored them 15 to 6!!! I think this was a defining "moment" for both our team as a whole, and for many playerz individually as well...

Our "Dynamic Duo" of Kevin Logan and Justin Rayson each scored a touchdown and also made several key plays in the second half to make the game a lot closer than the final score indicated! These two playerz have tremendous potential, and it looks like they are ready to step up for the rest of the season and make the kind and level of contributions which I believe they are capable of doing...

Another standout day by Talan Torriero... posting the Breakerz' longest run from scrimmage this year, a fumble recovery, a pass interception, kicked our first two-point "extra point" of the year (assisted once again by Kevin Logan (snapper) and Justin Rayson (holder)), and played an outstanding defensive game at linebacker.

Speaking of outstanding defensive games, Drew Cabaguing gave a tremendous performance at cornerback, effectively shutting down the Cobras' outside game in the second half, and gave the Breakerz another consistently great effort at tailback.

Travis Grogan added an extra point with his patented "Y-Look" pass reception, and Ryan Brunswick caught another long bomb pass from Kevin Logan (again!).

All the above notwithstanding, I really believe that our team played its best half of the entire season, and is now very well positioned to win its remaining two regular season games (versus Saddleback Valley Gold Bears and Fullerton Hornets)...

Way to play, and come back, Breakerz!!!

Player(z) of the Game:

Kevin Logan and Justin Rayson

Our Next Game...
Who: Saddleback Valley Gold Bears (League game)
When: Saturday, 23 October
Where: Home
Game Time: 10:00 a.m.

All players must be at LBHS Field at 7:45 a.m., fed, fully equipped (with clean uniforms), and READY TO PLAY!!!.

GO BREAKERZ!!!

History of Beach Cities Pop Warner Football

The Beach Cities Beach Pop Warner Football Association, a not-for-profit California Corporation, was started in the Spring of 1995 under the name Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football.  Three fathers, Victor Pfendler, Roger Torriero and Alan Wolf, all of whom had nine year old sons, wanted a youth football organization close to home so that their sons, and others in the Laguna Beach community, might have the opportunity to enjoy the game and develop basic football skills.  The three also believed that if a youth program could be started in the community, it would eventually feed the high school program and provide Laguna Beach High School football a needed edge in the highly competitive Southern California football arena.

Laguna Beach is a small town of approximately 25,000 residents.  A decade earlier, the town had attempted another youth football league which soon failed.  Due to this experience, and the general belief that Laguna Beach was more directed toward its artistic and adult roots, it was commonly believed that Laguna Beach could not support a youth football organization.

Despite these odds, a working group of interested parents was formed in the Spring of 1995 and the decision was made to proceed with the formation of two teams:  Thunder and Bulldogs. The Thunder, led by coach Richard Watson, was a Junior Midget team.  The Bulldogs, led by coach Victor Pfendler, was a Junior Peewee team.

A dedicated group of parent volunteers including John Engbarth, Eugene Gonzalez, Rose Cabaguing, Anna Lissa Ladiero, Kathy Bienvenu and Carrie Pitt,  Roger Torriero, Victor Pfendler and Alan Wolf, formed the organization's first Board of Directors.  There were a host of problems to resolve which were further complicated by the late start in the formation of the organization but somewhat miraculously it all fell into place.  For example, the Laguna Beach School District helped by allowing use of the football field.  The Saddleback Pop Warner Football organization helped by allowing Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football to participate under their banner until such time as the Orange Empire Conference officially recognized the program.  The Orange Empire Conference provided substantial assistance and guidance in the process of formation.   Through hard work and great luck a cheer team was added to the two football teams and over 75 children participated in the organization's first year.

As the first year moved forward, the teams dispelled many of the commonly held beliefs regarding Laguna Beach football.  First, the newly formed league was able to field not one, but two football teams and a cheerlead squad.  Next, the teams were highly competitive beating many teams from cities over ten times the size of Laguna Beach.  Finally, there was not a single serious injury.

As a result of this effort, Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football received a number of accolades from a variety of sources.  City sports writers hailed the program for its fine coaching and foresight.  Community leaders referenced the program as an example of community initiative. And the leading county newspaper, the Orange County Register, named the formation of the Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football Association as one of the leading youth sports events of the year!

In its second year Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football fielded three football teams and a larger cheer squad.  Over a hundred kids participated in the program and the teams gained a reputation for very tough but fair play.   The organization also purchased a large trucking container which resides at the Laguna Beach High School field as our permanent home.

In its third year, Laguna Beach Pop Warner Football changed its name to Beach Cities Pop Warner Football in recognition of the growing numbers of children outside Laguna Beach who were attracted to the excellent program.  Over a hundred children participated in the program which was comprised of four football teams and a cheer squad.  Several of the teams were in playoff contention. Laguna Beach and other area High Schools began to recognize the program as feeding top talent into the High School programs.

Now in its fourth year, the future looks bright for youth football in Laguna Beach!  Beach Cities Pop Warner Football continues its great record of outstanding achievement.  We hope you will consider joining our family.
