Frequently Asked Questions
Key Code
1. I
have two computers. May I use The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium on both
computers?
Yes, you can use the
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium on two computers with the same Key Code. If you have
more than two computers, that's a different sort of problem. Click
here for more
details.
2. I
have to enter my Key Code each time The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium starts.
What am I doing wrong?
There are two possibilities. First, the
software may not like you. Second, when you installed the software,
you were not fully logged onto your computer. Properly log onto your
computer, reinstall the software and then enter the Key Code. Voila! You
should not need to reenter the Key Code again. If this doesn't work,
then it probably was the first problem. In that case, you might want
to try a personal improvement
course.
3. By
entering the Key Code, am I entering into some sort of secret agreement to
use The Wolf Firm for all of my legal work?
No, that is unless you are a
Freemen or belong to some
other anarchist militia
group and then, of course, by virtue of the "Free California
State," secret liens and the
Magna
Carta you're legally required to send us all of your legal work.

4. I
didn't write down my Key Code and it is no longer on the
www.wolffirm.com/aquarium page. How can I find it
again?
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium is intended for the use of clients and friends of
The Wolf Firm. If
the software is being used by others, it may be necessary to pull the program
and the Key Code from the site and allow use only by written request. If
you have already installed the software, and are a computer guru, you can
determine the Key Code by looking in the Registry. Click on "Start"
then "Run" and type "regedit" in the box and click OK. Look in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SereneScreen folder to view your Key Code. Write
down your Key Code, but do not make any changes to your Registry.
You can also e-mail us at
aquarium@wolffirm.com providing
your name, rank and serial number and if you look kosher, we'll send you
the Key Code and/or the software.

Installation
1. How
do I Install The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium?
Running the downloaded program will
unpack the program and install into a directory of your choice. The
default directory is C:\Program Files\SereneScreen\The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium. You will also be given the options of creating an Icon on
your desktop, creating a Quick Launch icon, and setting the
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium as your Default Screen Saver. For comprehensive
step-by-step installation instructions,
click
here.
2. I've
installed The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium but can only see one fish and a
black rectangle on the bottom of my screen that has the wording "Press the
space bar to: 1. Register now, and display seven of your favorite fish from
the included 21. 2. Temporarily remove the black box." What do
I do?
As Step 5 of the
Six Easy Steps
process details, after installing the program, you need to enter the
Key Code. Click on the space bar and then enter the Key Code
"AWOLF-26W6W-EO632-637V7" (without the quotes). For comprehensive
step-by-step installation instructions for the Key Code,
click
here.
3. Do
I have to install the The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium as a
screensaver?
That's a tough question. We would like
you to use the program as a screensaver because then, every time you take
a break and return to your computer, our beautiful
Wolf Firm crystal will be staring
at you reminding you to send us work (please, pretty please..). However,
the truth is that the program is not only a screensaver but can run as a
separate program simply by double clicking on the fish icon.
In fact, a lot of problems can be eliminated if you just run the program
from the Desktop as a regular program instead of as a screensaver. This is
because screensavers run at a very low priority, and can be "kicked out"
by almost any other program that tries to run (e.g., your real work).
Also, as a screensaver, the program uses more resources than it does
running simply as a program. The choice is yours. You know our
vote, but we won't be mad if you run it as a program (that is, as long as
you continue to send us work..).
3. How
do I uninstall The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium?
Why would you want to do that? If you have
technophobia,
you need to deal with it. Make a friend. Talk to someone. If
that doesn't work, simply run the Uninstall option on
the Start menu under Programs/SereneScreen (or wherever you installed it
to). Or simply run Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and remove
SereneScreen. Once you uninstall the software, if you want to install it
again at a later date, you WILL NEED TO RE-ENTER YOUR Key Code. The program
does not keep this information on your computer.
1. What
are the system requirements?
Pentium-class CPU (120 MHz or faster)
16 MB of system RAM
A DirectX 6 compatible 3D Accelerator Card with 16 MB or more of on-board RAM
2 MB of free Hard Disk Space
DirectX 6 or better installed on your computer
(Unless you have an old computer, you'll already have DirectX as part of
your operating system. If you don't have DirectX, you can download
it for free from
http://www.softpile.com/Utilities/Miscellaneous/Review_05207_index.html.
For this software, we recommend the DirectX 7.0a version instead of
the later 8.1 version)
The latest drivers for your video card (found at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
2. Will
The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium work with Windows NT?
No.
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium requires DirectX 6 or better to run. Windows NT 4 does not
have DirectX. Windows 2000 (which is NT5 for all intents and purposes) DOES
support DirectX and therefore runs the
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium.
3. I
have a powerful video card, but I'm getting fewer than two frames per second,
instead of 20-30.
The most common cause is forgetting to switch
the Desktop to High-Color(16-bit). If you are running the Desktop in
True-Color(24 or 32 bit modes), and the card does not switch automatically
(many do), then the Aquarium will use RGB Emulation instead of Direct3D HAL.
This means that all 3D calculations would be done in software, which is very
slow compared to hardware.
4. Will
The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium run on my notebook
computer?
Only the very latest notebooks with a GeForce2Go,
Rage Mobility or S3 Savage chip will run
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium. The NeoMagic chip will not work. If
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium does not work on your notebook computer, what good is it?
You should definitely go out and
buy
a new notebook.
5. Why
doesn't The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium work with my VooDoo2 (or other loop-thru)
card?
We don't believe in VooDoo. Also, the program
uses your system's Primary Display driver, and the loop-thru card would be
a different driver. If your primary display card is powerful enough, you
can try plugging the monitor directly into it, instead of looping through
the VooDoo card.
6. Will
The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium run on Dual Monitors?
There is not yet any built-in support for
dual-monitor setups, though we have heard of people getting good results
with such systems. Only the primary display driver is currently accessed.
7. Will
The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium run on a Mac?
No, and quit trying to hold on to a
dying breed.
Give it up and get a real computer!
8. I
have Automatic Updates turned on for Windows. Doesnt that
get the newest video card drivers for me
automatically?
No. Automatic Updates only automatically downloads
and installs critical updates to your computer. This includes security holes
or crash fixes. Your video card drivers are not considered critical, and
therefore you have to tell Windows Update to get and install the drivers
for your card. Simply visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
download and install your cards latest drivers.
9. I
don't meet the requirements. Instead of downloading the program as
a screensaver or standalone program, can I download a screenshot of The Wolf
Firm Aquarium as my Windows Wallpaper?
Yes. For comprehensive instructions on
downloading and installing the snapshot of the Aquarium used for The
Wolf Firm Holiday Card as your Windows Wallpaper (instead of a screensaver
or program),
Obviously, if you're using only a snapshot as your Wallpaper,
it's just a picture- i.e., the fish won't move, and none of the other
functionality in the full program will be present. Nonetheless,
it's still beautiful. If you don't like the idea of the Aquarium
as your desktop Wallpaper, you might instead want a picture of a
Wolf. Why? We have no idea. In fact, it seems kind
of silly. Nonetheless, a Wolf as your Wallpaper will
hopefully remind you of The Wolf
Firm (get it?) and that's all we care about. To get some
very beautiful Wolf pictures specially prepared as Wallpaper
for your desktop, click
here.
1. I
have The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium installed but it won't take my Key
Code.
The program and/or the computer may not like
you. Try speaking softly to your computer while gently patting the
monitor. You might also be trying to install on a LAN computer which requires
special access codes. Buy your system administrator a gift and then ask him
or her to install the program for you. While you're at it, you might
also want to consider developing a deeper relationship with your system
administrator; since computers never really work they'll always have a job
thus making them good "significant other" material.
2. The
Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium freezes and the fish stop
moving.
First make sure you have your Desktop color set
to 16 bit (high color). Second, if you can start the program, hit the
spacebar and go to the settings screen. In the settings screen de-select
the "Desktop resolution" option and chose another resolution like 800X600.
Also de-select the "Exit on mouse move" if it is enabled. Third, sometimes
a program (such as virus protection, automatic utility program or TSR) will
access the system periodically and kick out the program. Try disabling these
types of programs to see if it makes a difference. Fourth, check to make
sure that you have the best driver for your video card from the manufacturer.
If none of this works, your fish might be dead. Dispose of your
long lost pets in a
proper
manner.
3. The
Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium works perfectly on my friend's computer, but not
mine. Why?
Check to determine whether your computer is plugged
in and if you have turned it on. If the problem relates to
either of these reasons, immediately disconnect your computer,
place it back in the box it came in and return it directly to the store or
online center from which you purchased the computer. You are obviously
one of those people who should not be using a computer.
4. My
computer keeps locking up
Welcome to the world of computers! This
is perfectly normal. In fact if your computer didn't lock up, something
would be seriously wrong. However, if you have a G-Force card and WinXP,
and are experiencing lock-ups, try a different driver. There is a problem
with the "Microsoft Certified" driver. A discussion is here:
http://www.feldoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=649
5. My
fish are plain white (no textures), how can I fix this
problem?
Send your computer to a
diversity training
course. You might also want to press CTRL-T while the program
is running, this turns off the compressed texture routine that the Aquarium
is using, and helps certain video cards render the textures better. You also
will want to go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
to get the latest drivers for your video card. Windows does not automatically
update these drivers even if you have "automatic updates" on.
6. I
am trying to install the program, but it doesnt work. The shortcuts
it creates are broken, and the program doesnt
run.
Make sure you disable any Virus protection software
you are running when you install the program. These programs are known to
interfere with the installation of
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium and cause all sorts of problems. After the program is installed,
you can re-activate your virus protection software.
7. The
ABOUT and HELP buttons don't work in the Desktop Windows
Preview.
To use the ABOUT and HELP buttons the program
must be running. While the program is active press the space bar to bring
up the settings window. From here you can access the ABOUT and HELP
options.

1. What
are the types of fish that come in The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium?
The
Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium currently has the following fish:
Yellow Tang, a Blue Tang, a Golden Butterflyfish, a Flame Angel, a
Queen Angel, a Royal Gramma, a Copperband Butterflyfish, an Addis Butterflyfish,
a French Angel, a Wimplefish, a Forcepsfish, a Regal Tang, a Clown Triggerfish,
a Percula Clownfish, a Purple Sailfin Tang, a Picasso Triggerfish, a Blue
Damselfish, a Regal Angelfish, Koran Angel, a Three Stripe Damsel, and a
Lionfish. There is also a Starfish that moves along the gravel floor and
sometimes climbs the aquarium glass. A picture of all of the fish,
and the names of The Wolf Firm
personnel who have adopted the fish as their particular pet, can be found
by clicking
here.
2. I
only see the same seven fish in The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium. How
do I get the other fish to swim in the Aquarium?
When you first install
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium, the program defaults to showing only the following seven
fish:
Yellow
Tang,
Addis Threadfin
Butterflyfish,
Powder Blue
Tang,
Flame
Angel,
Queen
Angel,
Royal
Gramma and
Copperband
Butterflyfish. Unless you change the settings,
you will only see these seven fish. How boring.. To
change the settings to allow for other fish to be presented, press the space
bar while the program is running. This will bring up the settings window
which has a section entitled "Livestock." The Livestock section provides
a slot for each of the seven fish that can be displayed at any one time.
You can choose any one of the twenty-one fish for each of the seven
slots by clicking on the small black triangle to the right of each slot and
scrolling up and down through the menu. For example, you can choose the
Yellow
Tang for each of the seven slots. The result would be a school
of seven
Yellow
Tang swimming in The
Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium. Selecting "<OFF>" in a slot
will leave that slot blank and the Aquarium will have one less fish on the
screen. Choosing "<RANDOM>" will result in the Aquarium program
picking one of the twenty-one fish for you at random every time you open
the program. That's what we recommend. To see a visual of our
recommended settings (one picture is worth a thousand words),
click
here. To see pictures of all of the fish, and
The Wolf Firm Employee who has
adopted the fish as his or her personal pet,
3. Why
is there a limit of seven fish at any one time in The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium?
There are several reasons. First,
the number
7 has great meaning. Second, a real saltwater aquarium of this
size (200 gallons) could not support more fish. Third, more than seven
fish in the aquarium at any one time makes the aquarium look visually crowded.
The fourth reason is that the graphics overhead for more fish slows the system
down too much. We know that some very wealthy people (such as outsourcers)
have very powerful graphics cards, which are producing 100 frames per second
or more, but most of us normal folk do not, and the programmers of
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium wanted the experience to be satisfying for the largest possible
audience. Long live the proletariat!
4. Will
the Starfish climb on the glass, and if so, how do I get it to do
that?
Yes, under the proper conditions the Starfish
will move onto the glass and climb up the glass. To achieve this result,
leave the Automatic Lights switched on and wait for the Starfish to move
toward the glass. Be patient, the Starfish moves very slowly. Once
the starfish moves to the glass, turn the foreground lights completely black.
The Starfish will then slowly climb up the glass. To see a picture
of this,
click
here.
5. I
enjoy the Aquarium but really don't like staring at The Wolf Firm crystal.
Is there any way to remove the crystal?
Yes, there is a way to remove the The
Wolf Firm crystal.
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium was created using a variety of highly sophisticated graphics
programs. For example, the fish were created using a combination of
Newtek Lightwave and
UVMesh. The aquarium coral and crystal were created using a combination
of these and other programs including
Adobe
Illustrator. To test the crystal in this highly complex
environment, a program was developed by
Adobe for the quick removal of
the crystal called "crystalremove.exe." When the crystal is
removed, it is replaced by water, but the fish will not swim through the
area previously occupied by the crystal. To obtain a copy
of crystalremove.exe from the
Adobe site,
click
here. Please note that the removal
program was intended only for testing the temporary removal of the
crystal, long term removal may cause overall
instability in the program.
For this and other obvious reasons, we highly discourage removal
of the crystal.
6. What
are your future plans for The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium?
Initially, we would like to add new fish and
new functionality (such as feeding the fish and having them react to a tap
on the screen). But our overall plans are much broader. As
artificial intelligence develops,
we want to start developing fish that do certain servicing acts like simple
pre and post-petition bankruptcy accountings. Eventually, we would like to
train the fish to do more complicated tasks and finally to replace whole
loan servicing departments. Essentially,
The Wolf Firm Virtual
Aquarium is giving you a glimpse at the "fishy" future of mortgage
banking.
7. How
did you find the time to create The Wolf Firm Virtual Aquarium and this
site?
That's the problem. We have too
much time on our hands. What further proof do you need?
That's why we're asking you to send us some
work.
